History of FIFA Games

FIFA, also referred to as FIFA Soccer or FIFA Football, is a well-known series of football simulators released every year under the EA Sports banner. Since its first release in 1993, it has garnered the reputation of being the slickest and most popular video football game. It is listed in the Guinness World Records as the best-selling video game franchise globally.

The widely popular FIFA video game series has been played for more than 20 years. The game lets you play with top clubs, leagues and players in football, in all realism and detail. Played in more than 50 countries, the game is available in over 10 languages and has till date sold over 260 million copies. The game has witnessed several improvisations and changes since its first release in 1993.

FIFA 93 had Piotr Świerczewski and David Platt as cover athletes. FIFA 95 had Erik Thorstvedt as the cover athlete and was released on Nov 10, 1994. It did not bring much changes to the initial version except that in this version they allowed users to play with club teams. FIFA 96 had Jason mcateer and Frank de Boer as the cover athletes and was released on Sept 30, 1995. This version pushed the boundaries with PlayStation, PC, Sega Saturn and 32X using the “Virtual Stadium” engine of EA that had players play in a real-time 3D stadium.

FIFA 97 went a step further and included polygonal players and had an indoor soccer mode. It had Bebeto and David Ginola as the cover athletes and was released on Nov 30, 1996. FIFA 98 had enhanced graphics and a complete World Cup with qualifying levels. This was the brand’s very first licensed football tournament game. It had David Beckham; Roy Lassiter; Raúl (Spain); Paolo Maldini; Andreas Möller; David Ginola as cover athletes and was released on Nov 8, 1997.

In 2010, FIFA games became the best-selling video game franchise with over 100 million copies sold. FIFA 12 sold 3.2 million in the very first week of its release and was soon dubbed by EA sports as the most successful launch in its sports history. It had Wayne Rooney; Theo Walcott; Frank Lampard; Wayne Rooney; Tim Cahill; Wayne Rooney; Andreas Ivanschitz; Balázs Dzsudzsák; Ronaldinho; Robert Lewandowski; Bastian Schweinsteiger; Giorgio Chiellini; Cuauhtémoc Blanco; Steve Mandanda; Guillaume Hoarau; Sergei Semak; Simão; Xavi; Karim Benzema; Sacha Kljestan and Frank Lampard as the cover athletes and was released on Oct 2, 2009.

In 2012, Lionel Messi was signed to the FIFA franchise. It had Wayne Rooney; Jack Wilshere; Landon Donovan; Rafael Márquez and Jakub Błaszczykowski as the cover athletes and was released on Sept 27, 2011.

In 2013, women football players started a petition to include female players in the FIFA series and in FIFA 16 female national football teams were released. FIFA 16 had Lionel Messi and Jakub Błaszczykowski as the cover athletes and was released on Sept 25, 2012.

FIFA 15 had Lionel Messi; Gonzalo Higuaín; Eden Hazard; Tim Cahill; Clint Dempsey; Robert Lewandowski; Atsuto Uchida; Xherdan Shaqiri; David Alaba; Arturo Vidal; Javier Hernández; Arda Turan; Michal Kadlec and Yahya Al-Shehri as its cover athletes and was released on Sept 23, 2014.

FIFA Mobile, released on 2016, is the first mobile game of the series to include live events, player plans, leagues, new attack mode and program packs. FIFA 17 used the frostbite game engine for the first time. It also became the first series to include a story mode called “The Journey”. The game also had the Japanese J1 league for the first time.

FIFA 16 had Lionel Messi; Shinji Kagawa; Jordan Henderson; Oscar; David Alaba; Eden Hazard; Antoine Griezmann; Juan Cuadrado; Yann Sommer; Steph Catley; Marco Fabián; Omar Hawsawi; Alex Morgan; Tim Cahill; Mauro Icardi; Christine Sinclair; Arda Turan; Arkadiusz Milik; and Sebastian Giovinco as its cover athletes and was released on Sept 22, 2015.

FIFA 18 became the first title to feature Ultimate Team ICONS on all the systems including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. It had Cristiano Ronaldo & Ronaldo as its cover athletes and was released on Sept 29, 2017.

FIFA 19 introduced the Europa League, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup competitions to the game. It also has the Chinese super league. It had Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar as its cover athletes and was released on sept 28, 2018.

FIFA 20 is slated for release on September 27, 2019. Titled “Volta Football”, it is a renaissance of the FIFA Street-style elements of the previous years with a variance on the 11v11 gameplay. The game emphasizes on independent play and skill instead of team or tactical play. It has Eden Hazard; Zinedine Zidane and Virgil van Dijk as its cover athletes and is slated for release on Sept 27, 2019.
